Martin's® Famous Potato Rolls and Bread will be the Official Potato Roll of the NBA Washington Wizards and NHL Washington Capitals for their 2021-2022 seasons.

As part of the partnership, Martin's products will be included at the concession areas in the Capital One Arena.

Martin's has been delivering fresh potato roll and bread products to most major grocery outlets as well as foodservice establishments in the Washington D.C. area since 1984. Martin's Sandwich Potato Rolls and Martin's Long Potato Rolls are the number one branded hamburger roll and hot dog roll, respectively, in the Mid-Atlantic region (according to IRI sales data). Many popular restaurant chains serving items such as smash burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and BBQ utilize Martin's products on their menu.

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/2022-01-03-Healthy-Bread.pngHealthy Bread Brands You Can Find In Any Grocery Store
Like many companies, Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc. began as a small venture that eventually grew into a major brand. As the company's website explains, the "birthplace" of the business was a one-car garage. Since then, other manufacturers have tried to copy the taste and texture of Martin's products, which are made from ingredients like 100% stone-ground whole wheat flour. Other foods you'll find on a typical Martin's nutrition label include nonfat milk, sunflower oil, cane sugar, and potatoes.

Of course, it's impossible to talk about the company without mentioning Martin's potato rolls and loaves. The original version of this product is what helped launched the business more than 60 years ago. Fast forward to today, and you'll find the company has expanded to include a 100% whole wheat version of their flagship bread loaf. But beyond the individual flavors of Martin's breads are their nutritional value. All their current bread loaves contain calcium, which is not only important to help keep your bones healthy but also supports your muscles, nerves, and heart's health (via Mayo Clinic). Additionally, Martin's bread loaves all have the nutrients iron, potassium, thiamin, and riboflavin, and some also contain niacin and folate.

Although Martin's is made from healthy ingredients, there is one important reason you should still check the nutritional information panel on their breads' bags: The sugar content for their loaves can fluctuate and exceed Consumer Reports recommended amount per slice.

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/2022-01-01-PA-Sandwich.pngThe Ultimate Pennsylvania Breakfast Sandwich

After spending the day with Chef Josh Fidler during our first episode of Pennsylvania Kitchen, we have a new gold standard in the breakfast sandwich category, and we’re calling it “The Ultimate PA Breakfast Sandwich.”

It starts with local eggs and cheese, naturally, but gets a very cool, almost brunch-y treatment with the addition of herbed mayo, crunchy shredded lettuce and zesty onions. We love the meaty addition of Seltzer’s Lebanon Bologna (proudly made in Lebanon County, PA), that takes on special savory, caramelized flavor when it’s fried — a totally different experience than eating it cold. All of the ingredients piled between slices of soft, sweet Martin’s Potato Bread makes this sandwich a real breakfast winner.

The project will add a production line at its existing facility while expanding with 260,000 square feet of new production space and the addition of a 16,000-square-foot cold dock. Martin’s said the dock will be used to “to supply frozen product for export to third-party international distribution partners.”

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/09-14-7th-Street.png7th Street Burger Will Set You Free From the Tyranny of Choice

The old-fashioned pegboard lists a whopping four food items: a single cheeseburger, a double, an Impossible burger, and fries. That’s it. The lack of choice keeps volume up, waste down, and ordering speedy. The burgers are bigger than sliders, smaller than ShackBurgers, and come one way only: topped with American cheese, pickles, and proprietary sauce on a griddle-toasted Martin’s potato bun. This is, thinks Rezvani, how God intended burgers to be as well as loosely packed, onion-smashed, crisp-edged, and spectacularly greasy. One bite and you see the man’s point. It’s one of the best new burgers in town.

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/09-03-Beet-Box.pngFrom burgers to barbecue, Beet Box's Jordan Holman is behind two new pop-up concepts in Columbia
Everyone loves a juicy burger, so at SmashBox, we’re serving elevated yet approachable smash burgers and more. We use our own fatty blend to make sure we get a thin, crispy patty, and our classic burger with ketchup, mustard, pickles, onion and yellow cheese tastes very much like a burger you’ve probably had before, just our style. Each burger has its own vibe, though. The Fancy burger, for example, has caramelized bacon jam, Muenster and “fancy sauce.” We always use Martin’s potato rolls, and we’re pretty excited about that. We’ll probably have this same menu at one more pop up and then switch one or two of the burgers. Both of our concepts – SmashBox and Grand Daddy’s – are obviously very meat-driven; we have discussed a black bean patty, but it’s something that we need to play with and make it our own. If we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it our way.

There’s also a house commitment to chicken. While you can order chicken with your biscuits,  there are also chicken sandwiches served on a soft Martin’s Potato Roll, a bread with the sort of softness that embraces the aggressive crunch of the house fried chicken – prepared borrowing a Korean-styled frying approach. Try the Simple Jack ($10), more bird than bun, it’s finished with sauce, pickles, and fiery sriracha ranch dust that delivers a delightful stinging kick at the end.

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/SandwichRolls-default_thumb.jpgMartin's Famous Pastry Shoppe Announces Executive Promotions
Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc.®, best known for making Martin's Famous Potato Rolls and Bread, announces executive promotions for members of the Martin family's third generation of company leadership.

The popularity and success of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe is due in large part to the Martin family—their history and the values on which the company was founded. From its humble beginning in 1955 in the garage of Lloyd and Lois Martin, Martin's® has grown into one of the nation's leaders in bread and roll production.

On August 1st, second-generation Martin's leader, James (Jim) Martin, will be stepping aside as President of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe and the day-to-day operations of the company. Jim will retain the role and title of Executive Chair of the Board and continue to have great influence on the direction and strategy of the company.

Can there ever be too many sesame seeds on a bun?

I don’t think so. I did a lot of testing with different buns, but settled on this one. It’s a Big Marty’s Roll from Martin’s. You’ll see a lot of smash burgers using Martin’s.

A big part of what makes the Big Mac appealing in pictures,” a burger aficionado I know mused the other day, “is that the patties extend past the perimeter of the bun. But then you actually get one, and most of the time you can barely even see the patties.” We were sitting outside Smashed NYC, a new burger shop on the Lower East Side. He peeled back the black-and-white checkered wax paper folded around the Big Schmacc, a highlight of the menu. Two thin jagged-edged disks of deeply browned ground beef hung floppily over the limits of three halves of Martin’s “Big Marty’s” sesame roll; there was clear visual evidence, too, of sharp-cornered, barely melted slices of American cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, crinkle-cut pickle coins, and Creamsicle-colored Smash Sauce. “This is what it’s supposed to look like,” he explained, with the authority of a biologist.

/SiteAssets/Featured-Articles/2021-06-04_22-Different-Kinds_thumb.pngI Tried 22 Different Kinds of Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns to Find the Very Best Ones for Summer Cookouts
The Best Hot Dog Buns: Martin’s Long Potato Rolls
Martin’s Long Potato Rolls have the perfect blend of flexibility and strength. They’re chewy and soft (never crumbly), which make for an excellent hot dog hammock. The flavor was also there — not too sweet, but sweet enough to complement all the salty flavors of a hot dog and condiments.

These buns also got super high marks for staying soft after a few hours of air exposure, and were even still usable a few days after opening them. (A lot can happen to enriched processed bread the moment you expose it to air, even if it’s just to take out a single bun. But these held up well!)

The Best Hamburger Buns: Big Marty’s Large Rolls
Surprise, surprise: Martin’s takes home another W, this time for the hamburger bun category. But there’s a twist: While I loved their classic potato rolls (a must-buy according to Kitchn Essentials, Grocery Edition), I fell even harder for Big Marty’s. I think a lot of people are Team Sesame Seed on a burger bun because the nutty savoriness complements the tangy condiments and the richness of the main protein. Plus, sesame seeds bring texture to the party.

Okay, enough about seeds. Let’s cut to the bread: These are not potato rolls (they don’t contain any potato like the more famous Martin’s rolls and buns), and I really appreciated that the crumb was a little wider. Bigger crannies mean condiments can cocoon in there. And then, while some buns can get a little too soggy if you go heavy on the condiments, these held up. Turns out, having a bit of a drier crumb (dry, not stale) means the bun can stand up to the juicy patty and condiments. I also liked how big these are. They’re wide enough in diameter to hold a big patty, heirloom tomato slice, and an onion ring or two.

Palm Beach Meats

"Every Saturday, locals have also been making regular treks to the Swank Specialty Produce weekly farmers' market to snag deals — and a taste of Frisbie's $5 wagyu sliders. GIven a simple seasoning and cooked in a hot steel pan with nothing but its own rendered fat, these sliders are best with just the fluffy Martin's potato roll they're served on, but are beautiful to behold with a slice of Swank's fresh lettuce and tomato."

Tropical Smokehouse

"The most American thing on the menu, however, is the smash burger. Make yours a double: two patties griddled to perfection, each topped with an oozing-melty slice of American cheese, and a choice of onion, pickle, and tomato. Before you even get a bite in, the standard Martin's potato roll soaks up just enough of the juice and fat, making the paper-and-foil casing it comes in extra handy."

In early 2020, former Yardbird Southern Table chef Teodoro Armas decided to start making burgers. The idea was born in his backyard, where his burgers became a hit with friends and family. It quickly turned into a passion pursuit. Today, what began as a pop-up in an O'Reilly Auto Parts parking lot is now a smashing success — literally. These days you'll find Armas' weekend-only pop-up as a regular fixture at J. Wakefield Brewing in Wynwood where hungry patrons line up for a taste of his "American Classic" smash burger, prepared to order with your choice of a single, double, or triple patty. With just a touch of salt for flavor, the hot griddle does the lion's share of the work, creating a beautiful sear that intensifies the flavor, allowing the meat to speak for itself. Finished on a Martin's potato roll, it's a simple — and near-perfect — representation of the smash burger art form. The South Beach Wine & Food Festival judges certainly thought so, awarding Ted's burger a Schweid Judges award at the 2021 Burger Bash.

Everything You Need To Make The Best Smashburgers At Home

Shake Shack and a host of other burger spots use Martin’s Potato Rolls. They’re incredibly soft, dense, a bit sweet (think brioche), and have a depth of flavor you can’t really get from your standard white-bread hamburger buns. If you can’t find them at the supermarket it’s because everyone else bought them up for their barbecues already, but you can buy them here:  (link)

The fried chicken sandwich from MOChicken may be a worthy contender.

“One is the freshness — we’re making sandwiches to order,” McCann said. “We’ve got a great proprietary breading that we use. We use Martin’s potato bun, which is the best way to make a chicken sandwich. They’re light, pillowy and delicious. We use Duke’s mayonnaise, which, there’s a mayonnaise war too, but I don’t want to get into that."
